The world’s most trusted, dominant ICBM force. The base enjoys a rich history, spanning more than 150 years and providing the front line of defense for America and her allies. Cheyenne and the base were both established in 1867. Originally named Fort D.A. Russell, the base was renamed in 1930 as Fort Francis E. Warren to honor Wyoming’s territorial governor and first state senator. In 1949, the Army fort became an Air Force base and was renamed Francis E. Warren Air Force Base. Warren has the distinction of being the Air Force’s oldest continuously active installation. The base and the community thrive in a spirit of friendship and cooperation built over many years.Cheyenne and the surrounding communities offer something for everyone. Every July the city hosts Cheyenne Frontier Days, “the daddy of ’em all,” the country’s largest outdoor rodeo, in conjunction with Fort D.A. Russell Days, F.E. Warren Air Force Base’s open house.
